Masked Identity

Artist Statement:

My Masked Identity project focused on the feminine aspects of my identity that I accept, and the feminine aspects of it that I reject. I am using femininity in reference to how the culture stresses the feminine ideal - purity, self-sacrifice, modesty. The white symbolizes purity while the wheat necklace represents self-sacrifice and hangs low by the model's uterus, symbolizing the sacrifices made by birthing a child (the sacrifice of the body and independence for family and motherhood). I want to embrace this part of the feminine identity within our culture, as I am eager to be a mother someday. But I reject the feminine ideals of purity and modesty, which is represented by the spiked halo.
